Sharks thrive in open water and the Columbus Sharks are no exception. Our team competes at the local and national level and several of our members have won USMS national championships. The Sharks also participate in triathlons around the world. For those wishing to test their fitness and compete, open water is a fantastic challenge. For those willing to find peaceful serenity, there is nothing better than swimming outdoors with no lanes, no lines, and no pace clock. Open water is a culture – and the Sharks embrace it.
Practices: The Columbus Sharks practice in the open waters of Alum Creek whenever the weather is warm – and sometimes when it is not (Polar Sharks?). The venue is perfect for open water newcomers to seasoned veterans. The swim beach is approximately 700 yards long and protected from boats. The water gets as deep as ten feet, but it is possibly to swim the entire length in water as shallow as three feet. As the weather warms up, look at the calendar for open water practice dates and times.
DIRECTIONS: Take I-71N to the Polaris exit. Turn left (west) onto Polaris Parkway and stay on that road for 1.8 miles. At South Old State Road turn right (north) and continue for 3.3 miles. Turn right (east) onto Lewis Center Road. The beach will be the second park entrance on the left hand side.
